The difference between sadness and depression

They can overlap, and both are valid experiences — but they have different qualities. Sadness is a natural human emotion. It often follows something meaningful, and even when it is intense, it tends to move and shift over time. Depression is broader than sadness. It can affect energy, motivation, thinking, and daily functioning — and may feel more persistent or harder to shift. Some people with depression don’t feel sad at all, but instead experience numbness, disconnection, or emptiness. Understanding the difference can help make sense of your experience — but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. If you’re unsure what you’re experiencing, support can help you work through it.
